Canned Foods: Why You Should Avoid Eating Them

It has been said may times that canned goods are not good for our health. Yet many choose them over fresh produce because they're easier to prepare and eat --- just what we need to survive a fast-paced world. Here are few reasons which might cause you to think twice about buying canned goods.

Canned goods include rat-killing chemicals. Bisphenol or BPA is used in lining the insides of the cans. It is believed to help in keeping the food products inside the cans to last longer. BPA kills rats in laboratories even though it is consumed in smaller portions.

Canned goods are rich in preservatives and salt. Salt is mixed with preservatives to keep the molecules of the latter from compounding. Preservatives and salt are not drastically harmful towards healthy people. They are directly harmful to pregnant women, babies, children, elderly, or people with chronic diseases.

Canned goods are prone to aluminum leaks. Aluminum cans leak due to many reasons. This is true even when they have been sealed properly. Aluminum mixes with the food inside the can. Aluminum ingestion can cause varied diseases over time. In fact. medical experts say that Alzheimer's and other memory problems can be caused by frequent acquisition of aluminum from food.

Three Reasons Why You Should Stop Eating Pork

Pork is delicious especially when it comes in the form of bacon. If you're keen about leading a healthy life, it is best that you avoid pig's meat and choose its white counterparts. Can't resist pork in your every meal? These things might change your mind.

Pigs eat anything. Pigs eat anything under the sun - from garbage to rotten  produce to animal and human excrement. All these become part of their meat in time. There are pork suppliers who are true to their goal of feeding their pigs with organic feeds. However, you can't be assured the pork that gets to your plate got nourished with at least clean feeds if not organic.

Eating pork can cause trichinosis. Trichinosis is a disease which can be mistaken for acute alcoholism, arthritis, gall bladder trouble, gastritis, meningitis, MS, and rheumatism. This is because its symptoms are similar to the said conditions. Trichinosis results from the presence of many parasites inside pigs. These Flukes, tapeworms, worms, and trichinae worms.

Pigs don't have sweat glands. Since pigs are unable to sweat, the toxins which come from the dirty food they eat stay inside their bodies. These toxins are transferred into your body when you consume pork. Moreover, pigs carry H1N1 virus and other viruses.

How Bitterness Can Affect Your Health

Painful experiences in our lives can cause bitterness in oour hearts. Bitterness affect the way we view and relate to other people. In fact, bitterness can even cause a physically fit person to be sick.

According to psychologist Dr. Carsten Wrosch, “Persistent bitterness may result in global feelings of anger and hostility that, when strong enough, could affect a person’s physical health.” If bitterness can get you sick, it can also greatly affect the quality of your life.

Dr. Wrosch explains further, "Bitterness may forecast patterns of biological dysregulation (a physiological impairment that can affect metabolism, immune response or organ function) and physical disease."

This somehow explains why bitter people often experience stomach pains. They also suffer from indigestion.

Bitterness can be avoided through the process of self-regulation. A bitter person  must be engaged and disengaged to other activities in order to overcome their negative emotions. If the bitterness is caused by a failure or frustration, the person must find ways to achieve his goals and continue with his previous plans.

Four Best Ways to Beat TV Addiction

Many are addicted to TV but they're unaware of it. TV addiction can greatly affect your health and productivity in life. It can also destroy relationships and make you miss important opprotunities at school or at work. Do you have a loved one who's glued to the tube? Help her get out of this destructive habit with these techniques.

Identify the causes of your addiction. Can you remember when you started watching TV for long hours? What caused you to watch TV longer than your usual TV time? Some people drown their negative feelings by watching TV. It helps them forget painful or sad things that happen in their lives. While entertaining TV shows can help you with the emotional process you're going through, they cannot impact your life positively in the long run. Seek professional help regarding your problem instead of living a couch potato lifestyle.

Come up with a plan. Start by identifying the number of hours you spend each day in front of the TV. Then, decide to allot one hour a day only for watching TV. If you can't do so, pick one or two shows which you can't afford to miss.

Avoid channel surfing. Stick only with the shows that you have chosen. Don't channel surf. Channel surfing will make you end up watching a movie or program that interests you and forget about the tasks you need to accomplish.

Avoid watching TV during the day. Watching TV during the day will keep you from doing important things. Once you're done with everything thatbyou need to accomplish, do other meaningful things like exercising, visiting a friend or creating some crafts. Write a book if you have the knack for it!

You can lead a healthier lifestyle if you're able to overcome your TV addiction. You will be more productive and  your mind will be able to generate more creative ideas.

Gum Disease - How to Treat It Naturally

Gingivitis and periodontitis are the top two illnesses that concern the gums. Both of them occur with swelling in the  gum area, softening of the tissue surrounding the teeth, bleeding before or after brushing, bad breath, development of pus and falling/loosening of the teeth.

Certain genetic factors and poor oral health practices are the culprits of gingivitis and periodontitis. Smoking and chewing tobacco share the top spot in making our gums and teeth susceptible to disorders. Presence of carbohydrates and sugars in the mouth due to the food we eat comes second. Nicotine from cigars and tobaccos, carbohydrates and sugars dig holes in the teeth and their foundation.

Reversing a gum disease could be very challenging especially when it is brought about by natural conditions. Puberty, pregnancy and menopause are some of the instances that contribute to various oral problems. Diabetes, obesity and stress are the other conditions of the body that harm the health of gums and teeth. Lastly, certain substances found in anti-depressants, oral contraceptives and heart medicines can also make oral problems worse.

The first signs of gingivitis and periodontitis must always be brought to the attention of a dentist. However, not all concerned are able to practice due to personal phobias challenging them. Because of this, people first try to cure them in a natural way. Natural remedies often come in the form of good oral hygiene. It first starts with the brushing and flossing everyday. Both should be observed every after meal. Next is regular massaging of the gums with the use of fingertips. This allows the blood to properly circulate in the area. Rinsing the mouth with saline solution can also lessen any form irritation in it.

There are substances, vitamins and minerals that can keep such irritations from plaguing the mouth. Drinking fruit juices rich in vitamin C and eating oranges, limes and guava contribute to the natural treatment for gum disease. Certain studies show spearmint or peppermint can help ease the effects of periodontal illnesses. For the regular massaging of the gums, tea tree oil is sometimes applied to the whole area. It is expected that these natural remedies may or may not work for some people. With this, it is still important that any oral condition be checked by a specialist.

Avoid Eye Strain with These Tips

Technology has provided us with a lot of things which entice our sense of sight with vivid images. You may not know about it but television, computers and mobile gadgets really strain our eyes. But what can we do? We can no longer live without them especially when our work requires everyday use of computers and mobile gadgets. Here are some tips that can help you avoid eye strain.

Taking a break is the simplest way to give your eyes their deserved rest. Resting your sense of sight does not necessarily mean closing them; rather, changing your view is more than enough. If you have been working long hours in front of a computer screen or watching a marathon of your favorite soap opera, looking up or staring somewhere else will surely relax your exhausted eye muscles.

Building strong eye muscles also prevent eye strain. Exercising your optical muscles is very easy and will not take much of your time. Simply close your eyes firmly for a few seconds and open them slowly. This may be repeated four to five times. It may also be accompanied with deep breathing.

Moreover, dampening your closed eyes with a warm washcloth can give added relaxation effects.
Staring at bright monitors and reading super small text are hard on your eyes. You would be doing your eyes a great favor by dimming the contrast of your computer screen, adjusting the page view percentage and increasing the font or text size when you have something lengthy to read on the screen.

Non-gloss screens and anti-glare screen covers are to consider when simple breaks do not do anything with your eye strain. Positioning your computer screen at 90 degrees angle to any light source can cut down the harmful glare. Wearing anti-glare eye glasses could be very handy too.

If you are experiencing dry eyes after staring at the computer screen or watching TV or doodling with any of your electronic gadgets for a long time, make an effort to blink your eyes every now and then. Blinking help produce the eye fluids you r eyes lose as they get very tired and itchy. If blinking does not make your eyes feel any comfortable, use some eyes drops that can refresh your eyes.

Learn How to Enjoy a Stress-Free Life Today

Stress is inevitable. Even the healthiest individual gets tortured by it every once in a while. Learning about its prevention can reduce its harmful effects in your mind and body.

Knowing events, individuals or things that cause stress in you and noting them down or keeping a journal of your stress patterns is the first step to take. Once you have done it, share what you have written with any of your nearest and dearest. This may sound odd or simple but by plainly talking about what troubles you eases up your anxieties inside. As you have now documented your stressors, this can serve as cue to relax. Let’s say avoiding events that make you feel tense and engaging in an enjoyable activity are some of the ways on how to prevent stress.

Including simple relaxation techniques such as deep breathing and stretching are also helpful. Slowly breathing in and breathing out is quite soothing. Twisting your neck or tensing your shoulders unwinds your muscles which may have stiffened after hours of hard work. Continuing this stretching to keeping a daily exercise routine may reduce your stress level and keep you from getting a heart disease.

Taking time for a hobby that interests you redirects your focus away from the things that pressures you. Singing, knitting, listening to some music, reading with pleasure are some of the pastimes you can relish without deadlines.

Another way to combat stress and live your life to the fullest is bonding with your family relatives and friends. Going out on a vacation with your loved ones can give you a break with your work and a refreshed outlook in life.

Consider consulting an expert if you’re unable to be stress free after observing the above-mentioned tips. Chronic or prolonged stress can endanger your life. Ask your doctor for suitable medicines and other treatments.

Five Best Tips to Eliminate Risk of Alzheimer's

Alzheimer's is an emotionally painful disease that shatters many families. It is a terminal disease that progresses over time. As it progresses, symptoms of forgetfulness and dementia worsen until an individual loses every aspect of personal autonomy. In some cases, its sufferers become unable to carry out conversations.

Some medical researchers believe that a person's risk of acquiring the disease can be decreased through the consumption of certain kinds of food and observation of a healthier lifestyle. Results related to this study is published in The Journal of the Alzheimer's Association.

Aromatherapy - In some clinical trials, patients were treated with the use of lemon and lavender balms. These balms were reported to be effective in relaxing the the excessive motor behavior or nervousness of the patients.

Avocado - This fruit is dubbed as the healthiest food for the brain. According to Dr. Daniel Amen, avocado is rich in folate which prevents brain tangles and reduces inflammation that attacks certain neurons.

B-complex vitamins - Surveys show that Alzheimer’s sufferers experience deficiency in Vitamin B12. This vitamin provides healthy nerves and red blood cells for the entire body. Lack of B-12 and B-complex can cause memory loss at any age. By eating eggs, fish and poultry, you can increase the supply of these vitamins in your body.

Coconut oil - Coconut oil contains ketone bodies or medium-chain triglycerides which are responsible for fueling the brain and the body. People afflicted with Alzheimer’s need these because their body’s ability to produce insulin that will aid formation of glucose (which will be used by the brain) has already changed.

Fasting - Fasting every other day allows the presence of healthy responses in the brain. Neuroscientist Mark Mattson of the U.S. Institute of Aging says, "suddenly dropping your food intake dramatically, cutting it by at least half for a day or so, triggers protective processes in the brain." When an individual fasts, or stops eating for a period of time, the body begins to change the way it converts energy. Buildup of plaque in the arteries and blood stream which leads to the brain happens when the food consumed for the day were not burned and converted to energy.

Be Healed of Musculoskeletal Problems with ART

Repeated injuries, post-operative complications and overuse of muscles can cause hampered or limited mobility. Scar tissues tend  to develop when muscles heal from injury or surgery. These tissues bind the supporting muscles and other tissues. Hence, inhibition of movements happen.

When a person experiences difficulty of movement, he is unable to do the things he used to do with so much ease. This can make him dependent upon the care or help from people around him. Moreover, this can diminish the quality of his life.

The good news is this condition can be treated by a massage technique called Active Release Technique. This is used by therapists to alter the soft tissues in the body. Therapists physically manipulate the target area to heal it. Problematic muscles are not the only ones healed through this process. Torn ligaments, nerves, tendons and fascia also benefit from it.

Other conditions that can be relieved by the Active Release Technique are:

• Backache
• Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
• Headache
• Knee Problems
• Plantar Fasciitis
• Sciatica
• Shoulder Pain
• Shin Splints
• Tennis Elbow

Athletes and other individuals whose work requires exertion of physical energy benefit a lot from Active Release Technique. It relieves their muscles of the stress they have acquired due to repeated use. It also allows patients to regain control over their bodies, to move independently once more and to reduce the cost of related treatments. Finally, it is a non-invasive solution to musculoskeletal problems. Hence, it is a holistic approach that can improve the person’s entire well-being.

Note: ART was developed by P. Michael Leahy, DC, CCSP.

Sure-Fire Ways to Beat Neck Pain

Neck pain can be very stressful because it is the kind of pain that pounds on your head and limits the movement and performance of your entire body. Massage, stretching and taking frequent breaks from work can lessen the chances of your neck pain from getting severe. But all these won't be enough especially when you need to accomplish a lot of tasks.

Neck pain is best addressed by observing certain practices that support the neck and frees it from pressure all the time. Keen to know what these practices are? Read up.

Avoid slouching - It is tempting to slouch when you’re tired. To avoid doing this, always  lean on your back and make sure that your back is supported. Keep both of your feet on the ground and relax your shoulders. When typing or doing something on the table, refrain from leaning forward or looking down. Always keep your head at eye-level.

Don't cradle your phone in between your chin and shoulder when making calls - Use a headset or put your phone in loud speaker if you make and receive a lot of phone calls while doing something. Cradling your phone can strain your neck.

Do some stretching exercises - Take frequent breaks when working. Do some stretching while on break by moving your head gently from side to side and shrugging your shoulders up and down.

Avoid sleeping on your tummy - This is stressful for the neck especially that you sleep long hours at night. Sleep on your back. Choose a pillow that the natural curves of your neck can handle. Sleeping on your sides is also acceptable.

Overcome Loneliness Today with These Techniques

Loneliness can be affecting your daily routine without you even noticing it. If you fail to nip it, it can be coupled with hopelessness and worthlessness. While lack of companions can cause a person to be lonely, the feeling of loneliness springs from something deeper like shame, guilt or belief of inadequacy.

Loneliness is best overcome by having healthy interactions and relationships with your family, friends and co-workers. Lonely moments are inevitable but you must take the effort to forget them and be healed from them. Here are the techniques that will help you achieve so.

Awareness - Be aware of your feelings. Observe signals from your body like emptiness in the chest and tightness in your throat. Cry if you feel like crying. It will make you feel relieved.

Acceptance - Accept the fact that you're lonely and don't numb yourself of it. Distracting yourself by overworking or over-entertaining yourself is not healthy. Avoid from criticizing yourself. Accept your uniqueness - your imperfections and strengths.

Compassion - Know that other people experience loneliness too even though they may not talking about it openly. You can ease your pain by showing compassion to people who go through similar situations. Allow yourself to receive compassion from these people too.

If you need more specific ways to battle loneliness, observe the following:

1) Do not isolate yourself from people.
2) If you are in an unhealthy relationship, break it off.
3) Enrich your current relationships with the people who support you.
4) Seek help and support from the ones who care for you.
5) Be proactive.
6) Enjoy solitude.

Hand and Finger Exercises: All You Need to Know

Have you ever thought why your hands and fingers are not as flexible and strong compared to those of your friends? While genetic make-up can be a valid reason, it is not the only explanation to that. Proper and regular exercises can also increase the flexibility and strength of your fingers.

You must make an effort to exercise your hands and fingers everyday. Working with your hands and fingers non-stop for the whole day is different from exercising them. The short video below will show you how you can give them a good stretch and break from their usual work.

You can also use an exerciser in stretching your hands and fingers. It is a hand-held exercise device that has four or five independent spring-loaded buttons or plungers that the fingers push down to exercise. On second-generation units, the resistance is adjustable on each plunger.

There are at least five reasons why using an exerciser would be more beneficial to your fingers and hands. They are the following:

Fingers are exercised individually. The individual plungers ensure that each finger gets exercised and strengthened and that no finger gets left out. You can optimize the resistance on each plunger by making some adjustments so that every finger gets the ideal workout every time.

Finger skills and stamina are improved. Independent finger movement, finger dexterity, mobility, and agility are four of the top skills which are improved by this device. This device also practices your hands and fingers not to get tired quickly when doing something. Athletes and musicians alike benefit from this greatly.

Additional finger extension exercises. These exercises are made possible by the newer 5-button devices and are critical for musicians. They strengthen the fingers for playing those difficult chords where the fingers are stretched far apart. This capability is unique to hand and finger exercisers.

Additional trigger finger exercises. These exercises provide for a smooth finger action and a steady hand when shooting. They are great for target shooters and hunters.

Wrists and forearms are strengthened. By placing the unit upside down on a table and pressing down with the hand, they can be used to strengthen the wrists and forearms. This capability makes these devices extremely versatile.

The Importance of Ergonomics in Your Everyday Life

Ergonomics literally means "work and its study" in Greek. To be more precise, it means "the study of work". Ergonomics studies how the body reacts and responds to the environment that it is placed in. The field of ergonomics has expanded beyond this simple concept. It now involves researches and studies which show how human beings are able to live with technology, machines and environments as part of the  modern world.

In the work place, ergonomics studies the compatibility between the workers and the tools and environment used for the work. Its more specific areas, even focus on the development or tools and furniture that can alleviate work-related issues such as chronic fatigue and stress syndrome.

Most people think that ergonomics has nothing to do with them because it sounds technical. But the truth is, ergonomics affects their daily lives specifically when they spend longer hours working in the office. This field of science promotes the creation of ergonomic designed products which can improve the quality of our lives at work and even at home. The absence of ergonomic-designed items can increase the risks of injuries and stress to people.

Ergonomists are consulted for the production of the above-mentioned items. They study humans as they interact with different machines and environments. In connection to this, ergonomists observe:
- how humans move
- the repetitive motions humans perform and how these motions affect the human body
- what makes certain situations more stressful on the body.

Work environment stress can be relieved by making changes to certain work-related practices. It can be as simple as altering how you sit in a chair or adjusting the distance of your eyes from your computer monitor.

Below is a video I stumbled upon. It shows the practical and ergonomic benefits of using a trackball instead of mouse.

Note: All credits to the owner. I’m not promoting the trackball’s brand.
