Learn About the Different Types of Dental Specialists

Dentists are the primary dental care providers you can approach in case of dental emergencies. With their knowledge and skills, they can diagnose gum and teeth problems, provide treatment and advise about preventive dental practices. However, there are different oral health care specialists you might need to visit to ensure your gums, teeth and mouth are in tip-top shape.

1. Endodontist – An endodontist is a dental practitioner who focuses on the treatment of dental pulp or nerves through root canal therapy and other root surgeries. This specialist may also advise patients about prevention of ailments affecting the dental pulp.

2. Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologist – This dental practitioner specialises in taking all types of X-ray images. He can also provide diagnosis, management and treatment of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial region.

3. Oral pathologist – An oral pathologist studies the causes of diseases affecting the teeth, lips, cheeks, jaws and parts of the face and neck. His duties include the examination and diagnosis of the biopsy, tissue, or lesion tissue provided by other oral health specialists.

4. Periodontist – A periodontist specialises in the care and prevention of gum-related diseases, guided bone regeneration, and dental implants. He is also capable of treating gingivitis and an advanced gum disease called periodontitis.

5. Orthodontist – This dental practitioner studies and corrects 'bad bites' of the teeth and surrounding structures which result from crowded, missing, or extra teeth or jaws which are misaligned. He uses bands, wires, braces, retainers and other removable corrective appliances in moving the bones to correct the misalignments.
